Missouri – Josephine Baker
A hugely successful singer, dancer, actress, and a civil rights pioneer who broke new ground for black performers in the early 20th century, Josephine Baker was born in St. Louis, Missouri.
Baker’s career really took off in France, where she would spend much of her life. She was even part of the French Resistance during the Second World War.
